Breaking: Apple Slyly Releases New Airport Express

For years the airport express, Apple’s $99 starter airport has gone untouched, but today while Apple had a high profile launch event for several of it’s products, the device was given a quiet, but major update. Nobody noticed until someone surfing ended up on Apple’s airport Express page and saw this.

Apple could not be reached for comment, but according to the website, the update is quite fresh. The new design looks like a white Apple TV compared to the old express which looks like an apple power brick. The website states the main advantage is it’s new dual band wifi which “transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time. So no matter which band your wireless devices use, they’ll automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest possible performance”. This, coupled with the wireless printing and airplay capabilities already included with the previous model make the airport express probably the router with the best value on the market.

The one oddity is the addition of an ethernet port for wired use. It seems strange that the moment Apple eradicates the disease that is ethernet on their Macbook line, they bring the capability to their router. Oh well. Apple’s Apple.
